‘’Explanatory Dictionary of Hymnographic Terminology’’

On May 19, presentation of the project ‘’Explanatory Dictionary of Hymnographic Terminology’’ took place at V. Sarajishvili Tbilisi State Conservatoire (Auditorium #307). The leader of the project is Davit Shughliashvili. Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation funded the project. DVD and web applications of the dictionary were prepared under the project.  The presented project, “Explanatory Dictionary of Hymnographic Terminology,” set as its objective the creation of a small encyclopedic electronic dictionary, visualization of holistic image of musical-hymnographic terminology, deepening the knowledge about the terms, and in this way, assisting the proper practice and scientific research of Georgian chant. In spite of Georgian hymnography being researched for centuries, as well as the publishing of several liturgical dictionaries and ecclesiastic encyclopedias, to this day no full dictionary of terms related to Georgian chanting that focuses on the musical aspects of churches' hymnology has been released. Because of this condition, semantics of many of the terms and concepts is to this day not fully known and explained in scientific works, encyclopedias, or dictionaries. The project contributes, on one side, to have this gap filled, the hymnographic and chanting terminology are explained in a way that shows their musical aspects more-or less perfectly, and on the other side, to find the unknown (forgotten) terms, a large part of which is being completely ignored by the contemporary hymnological or musicological scientific communities. "Explanatory Dictionary of Hymnographic Terminology" made through the project will help the initiations of interdisciplinary researches (complex researches drawing from Georgian hymnographic philology, history, liturgical traditions and musicology). The dictionary made by the project (in form of an electronic encyclopedia), parallel to the needs of scientific viewpoints, will also provide an assisting function to the educational process; the encyclopedic dictionary will carry importance as a study resource for the educational programs created and accredited in last several years - with the qualification of "Ecclesiastic Musicology." “Explanatory Dictionary of Hymnographic Terminology” will provide practical assistance to not only the beginner chanters, but to the specialists of the field as well. Besides the chanting terms, the dictionary encompasses short notes about the most important chants of yearly cycle of divine service, as well as the texts of those chants. Additionally, through the use of multimedia technologies, audio and sheet music samples related to the terms, concepts and chants are included in the electronic dictionary for further eminence.
